Using Wireless at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest

Summary: Set up your wireless device to use the UCSD Medical Center network. The network covers all areas except the Medical Library and research buildings, but is only available to Medical Center staff.
Use the basic entries below, and then follow the detailed instructions for your type of wireless device.
- Profile name: UCSDHC
- Network type: Infrastructure or Access Point
- IP configuration: DHCP
- Network authentication: WPA-PSK with TKIP data encryption
- Network name: Call the UCSD Medical Center Help Desk, (619) 543-7474, to get the current network name.

Configure your wireless card. |
- Open the card's management program, or the Operating Systems Network Adapter Management interface, and use the entries shown above.
- Use Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) encryption, a security protocol for wireless local area networks.
- Request a WPA-PSK encryption key by calling the UCSD Medical Center Help Desk, (619) 543-7474.
- Select Alphanumeric, if possible, and then enter the current WPA-PSK encryption key.

Configure your wireless device. |
- Open the entry screen: click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network Connections.
- Right-click on your Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.
- Select the General tab and scroll down the components window and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Choose Properties and ensure the IP and DNS settings are:
- Obtain an IP address automatically (use DHCP)
- Obtain a DNS server address automatically (use DHCP)
- Click the OK button.
- Select the Wireless Networks tab.
- Select the Association tab and enter:
- Network name: Request from the UCSD Medical Center Help Desk, (619) 543-7474.
- Network authentication: WPA-PSK
- Data encryption: TKIP
- Network key: Request from the UCSD Medical Center Help Desk, (619) 543-7474.
- Select the Authentication tab; all items should be grayed out.
- Select the Connection tab, and choose "Connect when this network is in range."
- Click the OK button. The Medical Center’s SSID will show as a preferred network.
- Click the Advanced button under preferred networks and verify the network type is Infrastructure (or Access Point).
- Click Close.

Connect to the wireless network. |
- Open your browser and connect to any non-secure Web site. (Its URL must begin with http, not https.)
- Log in with one of these:
- Active Directory (AD) login and password from WebOutlook, Web PCIS, Outlook e-mail
- Campus login
- If your wireless device is not set up for interactive authentication and you require automatic authentication, your device can be configured into the wireless network to auto-authenticate.
