How to Participate in the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) Program

Summary: Learn how UCSD Commute Solutions members can participate in the Guaranteed Ride Home (GRH) program.

In the right place? For information on eligibility and a program overview, see the Guaranteed Ride Home Program.

The GRH program will arrange for a cab or Enterprise Rent-A-Car to pick you up under these circumstances:

  • Personal or family illness
  • Unscheduled overtime (with a supervisor’s signature on the GRH voucher)
  • Stranded at work due to carpool or vanpool driver leaving for an emergency
What to do How to do it
1 Register for the GRH program and receive your first voucher.
  1. Complete a GRH registration form (PDF), or pick one up at the Commute Solutions desk in the parking office at the Gilman Parking Structure (map). Fax the completed form to RideLink at (619) 699-0709.
  2. RideLink will mail you a numbered voucher good for 1 ride. Note these voucher use guidelines:
    • You must pay a $3 co-pay to the cab or rental car agency for each voucher you use.
    • Each time you use a voucher, you will receive another one in the mail for future use. (You can receive up to 3 vouchers per year.)
    • Vouchers are not transferable, and unused vouchers do not carry over into the next year.
    • Lost vouchers cannot be replaced.
2 Arrange a ride through SANDAG's RideLink program.
  1. Have your voucher ready.
  2. Call 511 from any phone and ask for RideLink. If operators are busy, you may be asked to hold or leave your contact information for a call back within 10 minutes. (511 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.)
    • Request a Guaranteed Ride Home between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. weekdays only, and specify your pickup and drop-off points. Note the following:
      • If your trip is less than 20 miles from work, you will receive a cab ride. Specify if you need a ride home or to your car when speaking with the RideLink operator.
      • If your trip is greater than 20 miles from work, you will receive an Enterprise rental car. You must return the rental car to Enterprise within 24 hours with the gas tank at least 3/4 full. You are responsible for rental car charges after the initial 24-hour period.
    • RideLink staff will verify your enrollment information, then give you:
      • An authorization code that you must write on your voucher
      • The phone number to a participating cab company or Enterprise rental car agency
  3. Call the cab company or Enterprise to arrange your ride home. Provide the authorization code from your voucher when you call.
  4. Give the signed voucher and $3 co-pay to the cab driver or rental car agent when they pick you up.
Note: GRH service must be arranged between 7:30 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. weekdays. Whenever possible, contact RideLink at least an hour before you need a ride. Otherwise, anticipate a short wait for the cab or rental car agency to pick you up.
