Configuring Mac OS X 10.5.x or OS X 10.6.x to Use Encrypted (WPA-E) Wireless Services at UCSD  
 
Summary: Learn how to detect the Wi-Fi Protected Access-Enterprise (WPA-E) service at UCSD and configure your Mac OS X 10.5.x or OS X 10.6x machine to use it.

What to do How to do it
1 Download the certificate.
  1. Connect to UCSD's unencrypted wireless network or a wired connection.
  2. If you use Firefox, download the UCSD root certificate, and save the file to a location on your computer.
  3. If you use Safari, option-click to download the UCSD root certificate, select Download Linked File As..., and select a location on your computer.
2 Install the certificate.
  1. Double-click the UCSDCA-ROOT.cer certificate file icon on your desktop (or from your default save directory) to install the certificate.
  2. Keychain Access will open. When asked if you want to add the certificate to a keychain, select either:
    • login (this user only), or
    • System (any user of this Mac). Select this option only if you have administrator privileges on this machine.

3 Confirm installation in Keychain Access.
  1. If Keychain Access screen asks for your Mac OS X password, enter it and click OK.
  2. When asked "Do you want your computer to trust certificates signed by 'UC San Diego Certificate Service' from now on?", click Always Trust.

  3. Enter your Mac OS X password again when prompted.
  4. Quit Keychain Access to complete certificate installation.
4 Configure your Mac to use the encrypted wireless service.
  1. Click the AirPort symbol at the top right of your screen.
  2. Look for "UCSD-PROTECTED," but don't select it. If you see this network option, you will be able to use encrypted wireless in this area.
  3. Select Join Other Network... from the drop-down menu.

5 Configure the UCSD-PROTECTED option.
  1. Enter UCSD-PROTECTED for the Network Name.
  2. Set Security to WPA2 Enterprise.
  3. Enter your Active Directory username and password for User Name and Password.
  4. For Snow Leopard (10.6.x), set the 802.1X field to Automatic. For Leopard, set it to WPA: UCSD-PROTECTED.
  5. Click Join.

6 Enter your password when prompted.
  1. If prompted for your username and password to access the UCSD encrypted service, enter your Active Directory username and password. Leave "Only use this password once" blank.

7 Save the service to your preferred networks.
  1. Click the Apple symbol at the top left of your screen and select System Preferences.
  2. Click Network. Click AirPort in the left pane, then click Advanced.
  3. Click the Airport tab.
  4. Drag UCSD-PROTECTED to the top of the list.
  5. Click OK, click Apply, and then close System Preferences.
