Configuring Ubuntu 8.10 Linux to Use Encrypted (WPA-E) Wireless Services at UCSD

Summary: Configure your Ubuntu 8.10 Linux machine to use Wi-Fi Protected Access-Enterprise (WPA-E) at UCSD.

Note:

  • You must have root privilege on your computer to successfully complete these steps.
  • Ubuntu 8.10 has not been shown to function successfully on encrypted wireless when using the Broadcom BCM43XX series cards found in some notebook computers.
  • For more information, see Wireless Overview.
What to do How to do it
1 Download the certificate.
  1. Connect to UCSD's unencrypted wireless network or a wired connection.
  2. Download the UCSD root certificate.
  3. To save, select either save to disk or save file option.
  4. It is recommended that you specify an alternate download location such as ~/ or ~/Documents/ to avoid accidental deletion if the certificate is placed on the desktop.
2 Configure and connect to the encrypted wireless network.
  1. Find UCSD's encrypted wireless network:
    • Find the Network Manager icon in the notification area. It should look like a small signal strength indicator or a computer monitor and will probably be close to the clock.
    • Right-click the icon and ensure that Enable Networking is selected in the pop-up menu.
    • Make sure that Enable Wireless is selected.
    • Left-click the Network Manager icon and select UCSD-PROTECTED.
  2. In the Wireless Network Authentication Required window:
    • In the Wireless Security field, choose WPA & WPA2 Enterprise.
    • In the Authentication field, choose Protected EAP (PEAP).
    • Leave Anonymous Identity blank.
    • In the CA Certificate field, navigate to where you saved the certificate in the previous step.
    • In the PEAP Version: field, choose Version 0.
    • In the Inner Authentication: field, choose MSCHAPv2.
    • Enter your Active Directory username and password.
  3. Click Connect.
