How to Dispose of Batteries at UCSD Satellite Facilities  
 
Summary: If you don't have a Waste Generator Number (WGN), and if your facility is not located on the main UCSD campus, SIO lower campus, Thornton Hospital, or UCSD Medical Center (Hillcrest), follow the steps on this page to dispose of used batteries.

Examples of satellite facilities: SIO Mt. Soledad and Point Loma facilities, Whittier Building, Burnham Institute, Elliott Field, and outlying UCSD Medical Center clinics

What to do How to do it
1 Request a battery collection bin.

  1. Contact the Environmental Management Facility, (858) 534-2753. Include:

    • Your name
    • Phone number
    • Building
    • Room number
    • Address
2 Set up battery collection bins.
  1. Place collection bins at designated locations in your facility.
  2. Notify employees in your facility about the placement of the bins and their purpose.
If you collect batteries that are corroded or leaking, seal them into a plastic bag and request a special pickup. If you collect batteries that weigh more than 2 pounds, request a special pickup.

Special pickup: Send an e-mail with your name, phone number, building, and room number to hazwaste@ucsd.edu.

3 Request pickup of full collection bins.
  1. When the battery collection bins in your facility are full, send an e-mail requesting pickup to hazwaste@ucsd.edu. Include:
    • Your name
    • Phone number
    • Building
    • Room number
    • Address
