How to Pay a Participant in a Study

Summary: Use these step-by-step instructions to request a payment to compensate a human subject when the payment is made directly to the participant, and when strict confidentiality is not required.
Note: When confidentiality is required, Scrip is the preferred payment method for paying clinical trial participants, especially when there are many participants and the exact payment dates are not known. |

Gather information. |
- You'll need the following information in Step 2:
- Participant's Financial Identification Number (FID)
- Participant's name
- Participant's mailing address
- Participant's home address (if different from mailing address)
- Protocol number or study title
Note: The Financial Identification Number (FID) is assigned after a Social Security number is provided to Disbursements when the first payment is made to this participant. It is required because this type of payment is reportable as income.

Request payment. |
- Follow the payment authorization instructions for Payment Authorization online.
Note: To use Payment Authorization online, you must first complete the Payment Authorization class through Staff Education.
