Summary: Learn how to access required and recommended biosafety training.


Individual principal investigators and supervisors must identify job-specific hazards and make sure their employees attend safety training appropriate to the type of work they perform.

Required training
Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Required for lab workers prior to beginning work with all clinical specimens such as blood, human body fluids, tissue, and potentially infectious human cell lines. Potentially infectious human cell lines include primary cell culture and cell lines known or likely to be infected with HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C.

Annual BBP Refresher Training is required thereafter.

Annual Bloodborne Pathogens Refresher Training Required annually for all personnel who come into contact with human blood, human body fluids, tissue, and potentially infectious human cell lines. Potentially infectious human cell lines include primary cell culture and cell lines known or likely to be infected with HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C.

Prerequisite: Prior to participating in this annual refresher course, you must have completed the instructor-led Biosafety: Bloodborne Pathogens course.

Viral Vectors Required for all lab workers using viral vectors.
Orientation to Animal Research Required for employees working with research animals.
Recommended training
Biosafety: Principles Recommended for all lab workers using biohazards (Biosafety Level 2 or above).

Customized group training available upon request: Customized biosafety training will be presented upon request for work groups. Call (858) 534-5366 to schedule group training.
