Grief and Loss

Summary: Find links to information that can help you understand grief and loss, and suggest how to deal with associated emotions.

Any loss — a death, divorce, a fractured relationship, just to name a few — can be difficult to handle and many people express that even while surrounded by relatives and friends, they often feel abandoned and alone during and after a loss.

On the following pages, you will find information that gives you a better understanding of what people are feeling during a loss, suggestions on what you might say to people to help them through their loss, and other materials that will help support people.

The UCSD Bookstore provides many books and other materials on grief and loss. To search for these items, go directly to the UCSD Bookstore search.

For children and teens ages 6-17 who have experienced the loss of a family member or friend, the Center for Grief Care and Education at San Diego Hospice & Palliative Care, and The Moyer Foundation host Camp Erin, Sept. 5–7, 2008.

You may also contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) for suggestions on materials to help with grief and loss.
