With UCSD's state-of-the-art data network, you can send information over a high-speed backbone and access the wireless network in more than 90% of campus buildings. And with help from the Next Generation Network (NGN) funding plan, ongoing updates continue to improve UCSD's network services.
UCSD is a member of CENIC (Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California) and Internet 2.

Internet connection:
UCSD's network has redundant connections to the outside world, which includes:
- Over 10-gigabit connection through CENIC's CalREN2 (California Research and Education Network) regional network to Abilene (Internet 2) and NLR (National Lambda Rail)
- Direct connection to ESNET for specialized uses
Backbone:
Connections between campus areas include:
- 10-gigabit backbone
- 1- or 10-gigabit connections to buildings
Office connections:
The campus standard for NGN will provide category 5e or 6 (equivalent 1-gigabit capable connections) in all main campus and SIO wall data outlets by 2010.
