Safety Training for Trades Employees  
 
Summary: Find out how to access required and recommended safety training for trades employees at UCSD.

Responsibilities

Individual supervisors must identify job-specific hazards and make sure their employees attend required and recommended safety training for the type of work they perform.


Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)

Required for all employees receiving compensation from UCSD. You need to attend only once in your career.

Note: IIPP training is recommended for anyone working in a high-hazard environment, regardless of payroll status.

  • Register for IIPP at Enrollment Central.

Hazardous Waste Training

Required for employees who generate any chemical waste from a shop or studio.

Annual Hazardous Materials Training

Required annually for employees who work with hazardous materials.

Air-Purifying Respirator

Required for employees who are enrolled in UCSD's Respiratory Protection Program and use an air-purifying respirator.

Asbestos Regulatory Awareness for Trades Employees

Required annually for employees who may encounter asbestos in their work environment.

Asbestos Regulatory Awareness for Project Managers

Required for project managers whose job may possibly bring them into contact with asbestos.

Confined Space Entry

Required for employees who, as part of their required job duties, enter confined spaces as defined by Cal/OSHA.

Environmental Compliance / Pollution Prevention, Levels 1 and 2

Required for maintenance and service units with work activities that can impact storm water discharge, with a focus on developing and implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) to address these pollutant sources.

Hearing Conservation

Required for employees who, as part of their job, are exposed to noise levels at or above 85 decibels over an eight-hour workday.

Heat Illness Prevention

Required for employees who work outside in heat or hot conditions.

Lock Out/ Block Out Training

Required for anyone who directly repairs or maintains equipment or machinery where the release of energy (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, thermal, chemical, nuclear, etc.) could cause injury or death.

Storm Water Pollution Prevention

Required for maintenance and service units with work activities that can impact storm water discharge.

Ergonomics for Trades Employees

Recommended for employees performing repetitive motions, standing for prolonged periods of time, frequently bending, leaning, and lifting, or operating hand tools.

Back Injury Prevention

Recommended for employees who move or lift equipment or heavy loads.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Recommended for employees working with hazardous materials, equipment, or processes associated with a high risk of fire.

Recommended for employees who respond to work orders involving indoor water damage and possible mold issues.

UC Vehicles Driver Responsibility

Recommended for all drivers of UC-owned vehicles.

How to get the training:

Training is available by 2 methods:

  • Attend regularly scheduled training presented by Fleet Services on the second Tuesday of each month. Contact Fleet Services, (858) 534-3485, to register.
    OR
  • Schedule custom training: Contact EH&S Risk Management, (858) 534-3820.
