Department Safety Coordinators and Area Safety Coordinators are appointed by their departments to facilitate the flow of safety information and programs from Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) into the UCSD workplace.
Area Safety Coordinators (ASCs) are different from Department Safety Coordinators (DSCs).
DSCs represent all their co-workers, regardless of the kind of work performed. Every UCSD department should have at least one DSC. Large departments and departments with multiple locations may need more than one DSC to be effective.
ASCs do not serve an entire department. An ASC is assigned to a specific facility where work with hazardous material occurs, typically a lab, shop, or studio.

Safety training
Make sure personnel working in your department (including yourself) attend required safety training.
- Document all safety training.
- Read About Safety Training for information about record keeping requirements and accessing UCSD's online safety training records.
- Implement the Hazard Communication Program in your department.
- Teach employees who work with hazardous materials how to access and use Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS):

Emergency preparedness
Organize emergency preparedness for your department.
- Get emergency preparedness training.
- Organize an emergency preparedness planning committee for your department.
- Prepare a Department Emergency Action Plan.
- Be familiar with UCSD emergency preparedness and response procedures from chemical spills in the laboratory, to possible building evacuation, to a campuswide event.
- Encourage everyone to register their phone for emergency notifications.

- Check the UCSD Emergency Status page in the event of an emergency affecting the campus.

Odors and indoor environment concerns
Know how to respond and solve indoor environment concerns.

- Read Preventing Indoor Mold Growth.
- Read How to Respond to Indoor Floods.
- Odor complaints are among the most common calls you'll receive.
- Read What's That Smell? to learn about common and possible sources of troublesome (though not alarming) odors in the workplace and what you can do about them.
- Use the Odor Log (Word file) to track odor and indoor environment concerns. It will help maintenance and EH&S personnel track the problem down if you call for assistance.

Post or circulate EH&S newsletters for everyone to see. EH&S publishes 2 safety newsletters, alternating bimonthly:
- Safety Briefs newsletter is for all UCSD employees, no matter what kind of work they perform. Safety Briefs is distributed by campus mail bimonthly to Department Safety Coordinators.
- Lab Notes is a bimonthly safety newsletter for research employees. Lab Notes is distributed by campus mail to PIs, lab supervisors, and all Safety Coordinators (regardless of whether they work in a research environment or not).
- Receive an e-mail copy of both newsletters by subscribing to UCSD-flyers listserv. Read Electronic Mailing Lists at UCSD for instructions.
