Green Building Baseline Scorecards

Summary: Learn how UCSD designs, builds, and renovates buildings to meet green building and clean energy standards.

UC's green building scorecards encourage, recognize, and track environment-friendly buildings on its campuses. The rating system, developed by UC Facilities, Design and Construction with the Office of the President, parallels the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

The UC system acknowledges an integrated campus approach to sustainability, including buildings, energy, controls, transportation systems maintenance, site selection and planning, storm water management, and environmental studies. This rating system facilitates a comprehensive, effective approach to sustainability beyond what would be achievable on a single campus building or project. For example, park and grove acreage was set aside in perpetuity to offset campus development in other areas. The modified rating system also incorporates points for the University's numerous laboratory buildings, reflecting goals similar to the Labs21 rating system.

How it works: The UC rating system determines how many "points" each campus should achieve on every project, called campus baselines. Each project adds points beyond the baseline to achieve its desired rating. The two categories of baseline points are:

  • Recognized points: After being proven legitimate, these points are automatically achieved on each project. For example, many campuses earn a recognized point for their shuttle systems.
  • Target points: Each campus strives for points in specific areas, such as significant energy savings. Campuses must demonstrate how target points are actually achieved on individual projects.
