Program overview
UCSD's Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) protects the campus community from unnecessary and potentially harmful chemical exposure. It has 2 parts:
- General Chemical Safety Guidelines
- Laboratory Safety
The CHP describes institutional and employee responsibilities and provides:
- Requirements for safety training, communication strategies, facility requirements
- Operational standards for safe handling, storage, and use of hazardous chemicals in research and non-research areas of UCSD
Chemical hazards covered in the CHP include but are not limited to:
- Anesthetic gases
- Cleaning agents
- Compressed gases
- Controlled substances
- Cryogenic liquids
- Flammable and combustible liquids
- Highly toxic agents
- Known and suspected human carcinogens
- Organic peroxide forming materials
- Organic solvents
- Petroleum products
- Other hazardous chemicals
Responsibilities
- Principal investigators (PIs), managers, and supervisors are responsible for implementing the health, safety, and environmental management policies and practices on Blink's Laboratory Safety page, and within the Administrative Responsibilities Handbook, as the program relates to operations under their control.
- Individuals working with chemical hazards at UCSD are responsible and accountable for ensuring activities are performed safely and in accordance with current polices and guidelines.
- UCSD's Chemical Safety & Surveillance Committee (CSSC) oversees use of chemical agents in UCSD facilities. CSSC activities are guided by university policy, national guidelines, industry standards, and federal, state, and county regulations.
