Staff Education and Development Certificate Programs  
 
Summary: Read about certificate programs available to employees through Staff Education and Development.

Staff Education and Development offers 5 certificates. Those working on certificates have 5 years to complete the required course work. Click a link for information and eligibility criteria:

  1. Supervision Certificate (formerly Human Resource Management Certificate)
  2. Work Leader Certificate
  3. Training and Career Development Certificate
  4. Web Design Certificate
  5. Department Safety Coordinator Certificate

1. Supervision Certificate (formerly Human Resource Management Certificate): This certificate program was developed in accordance with the University of California's Guidelines for Supervisors (PDF). It focuses on essential supervisory competencies such as leadership, communication, planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, and performance management in a university setting. Supervisors can also complete a specialization in labor relations.

  • Enrollment eligibility: You are eligible if you have supervisory responsibilities for at least one career employee and your position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. You must be a designated supervisor to complete the Labor Relations Specialization. Those not eligible for the Supervision Certificate are eligible to complete the Work Leader Certificate.
  • Labor Relations Specialization: To complement the Supervision Certificate program, you can complete the Labor Relations Specialization if you are officially designated as "supervisor" by your department in accordance with Human Resources Department requirements. This specialization provides information and resources to carry out supervisory responsibilities within the guidelines of the Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA).The 2 required courses are:
  • Request your certificate: After completing the required coursework, request your certificate by sending a list of the courses you have taken (with dates of completion) to Staff Education and Development, Mail Code 0922 or via e-mail. A copy may be placed in your employee file as a permanent record of your attendance in staff development activities. You can review your training history at Enrollment Central or Blink MyTraining.
    • Note: The certificate indicates that you have completed the program, and it may be useful documentation when you are applying for a job. As in all cases, decisions about reclassification and hiring are at the discretion of the appropriate authorities according to university policies and practices.

2. Work Leader Certificate: This certificate program can help you develop your ability to direct the work of others and prepare you for supervisory responsibilities appropriate to the work leader role. The program comprises 7 required courses and one elective course; it has no eligibility requirements.

  • Request your certificate: After completing the required coursework, request your certificate by sending a list of the courses you have taken (with dates of completion) to Staff Education and Development, Mail Code 0922 or via e-mail. A copy may be placed in your employee file as a permanent record of your attendance in staff development activities. You can review your training history at Enrollment Central or Blink MyTraining.
    • Note: The certificate indicates that you have completed the program, and it may be useful documentation when you are applying for a job. As in all cases, decisions about reclassification and hiring are at the discretion of the appropriate authorities according to university policies and practices.

3. Training and Career Development Certificate: The Training and Career Development Certificate was formerly known as the Learning and Development Certificate. It's recommended that you take "Training Adults at Work: Principles" before taking "Designing Workplace Training."

  • Request your certificate: After completing the courses, obtain your certificate by submitting a list of courses taken (with dates) to Staff Education and Development, Mail Code 0922 or via e-mail. A copy may be placed in your employee file as a permanent record of your attendance in staff development activities. You can review your training history at Enrollment Central or Blink MyTraining.
    • Note: The certificate indicates that you have completed the program, and it may be useful documentation when you are applying for a job. As in all cases, decisions about reclassification and hiring are at the discretion of the appropriate authorities according to university policies and practices.

4. Web Design Certificate: Prerequisites include familiarity with a PC or Mac, including loading and saving text files, using a mouse, accessing network drives, and basic functions such as cut, copy, paste, and keyboard shortcuts. If you do not wish to pursue a certificate, you can take individual classes.

  • Request your certificate: After completing the required coursework, request your certificate by sending a list of the courses you have taken (with dates of completion) to Staff Education and Development at Mail Code 0922 or via e-mail. A copy may be placed in your employee file as a permanent record of your attendance in staff development activities. You can review your training history at Enrollment Central or Blink MyTraining.
    • Note: The certificate indicates that you have completed the program, and it may be useful documentation when you are applying for a job. As in all cases, decisions about reclassification and hiring are at the discretion of the appropriate authorities according to university policies and practices.

5. Department Safety Coordinator Certificate: The Department Safety Coordinator (DSC) Certificate improves workplace safety culture by exposing participants to a broad array of Environment, Health, and Safety courses. Participants develop essential safety leadership competencies such as facilitating, communicating, planning, goal setting, problem solving, and decision making.

  • One-on-one consultation: After completing the required coursework, schedule a one-on-one consultation with an EH&S specialist to discuss integrating basic health and safety principles into your workplace. To schedule, contact the EH&S Safety Training Manager, (858) 822-5974, or consult the Safety Training Directory.
  • Request your certificate: Request your certificate by sending a list of the courses you have taken (with dates of completion) together with EH&S interview documention to Staff Education and Development, Mail Code 0922 or via e-mail. A copy may be placed in your employee file as a permanent record of your attendance in staff development activities. You can review your training history at Enrollment Central or Blink MyTraining.
    • Note: The certificate indicates that you have completed the program, and it may be useful documentation when you are applying for a job. As in all cases, decisions about reclassification and hiring are at the discretion of the appropriate authorities according to university policies and practices. This certificate is encouraged, but not required to become a department safety coordinator, and completing the certificate will not automatically result in your being appointed a department safety coordinator. Department safety coordinators are designated by the department or work unit supervisor, manager or principal investigator.
