Overview: Move/ Transfer Expenses

Summary: Find out which new employees are eligible for reimbursement of moving expenses.

Move/ transfer expenses include the reasonable costs of moving household goods and personal effects to a new residence. These expenses also include the cost of travel to the new location for the eligible employee and immediate family members.

General guidelines:
  • A new employee who has been hired for a position that requires specialized training or experience may be eligible for reimbursement of 50% of moving expenses.
  • A transferring employee who is relocating to a new UC location may be eligible for full reimbursement of moving expenses.
  • An exception to the preceding guidelines may be authorized in advance. Send a request for exception by e-mail following the instructions in Step 4 of the approval guidelines.
  • Senior managers, managers, or senior professionals may also be eligible for a relocation allowance, which is equivalent to a taxable wage not to exceed 25% of the employee’s annualized base salary.
Guidelines for faculty positions can be found on the Academic Affairs Web site.
