You can access UCSD's wireless data network in most buildings and many outdoor public places on campus and at SIO. UCSD Medical Center at Hillcrest also offers a wireless service to their staff.
Access:
- If you need regular laptop access, select your operating system below to find out how to register your wireless card and configure your laptop.
-
If you need to configure your PDA, use the following information:
- Network name/SSID: UCSD
- Mode: Infrastructure
- Encryption: disabled
- Note: If you use a device that runs the Palm operating system, enter this phrase in the Comments field: "set up for no authentication"
-
If you need short-term access or are a visitor to UCSD, check with your host department, contact the ACT Help Desk, (858) 534-1853, or go to one of these locations for a guest access account:
- Combined ACS/ ACT Help Desk, AP&M 1313 (map), 8 a.m. — 4:30 p.m., weekdays
- Art of Espresso coffee cart on the south side of Mandeville Auditorium (map), days and hours of operation vary
- Note: If you're attending a conference on campus, check with your conference desk or host department for temporary Internet access or visit one of the locations above.
Security:
- Networked devices and computer applications need their own protection. The network cannot truly protect transmitted data, so any network conversation, wireless or not, may be captured by unintended viewers if it's not protected with encryption tools, such as SSH, Kerberos, or SSL. Use of UCSD's virtual private network (VPN) service provides good protection to users of the unencrypted wireless network. Some areas on campus offer encrypted wireless connections.
-
Read UCSD's wireless services guidelines for information on using wireless devices, and using or installing wireless networks. The UCSD Minimum Network Security Standards apply to the wireless network.
Questions:
- Access, password, and computer configuration: Contact the ACT Help Desk, (858) 534-1853, or visit the combined ACS/ ACT Help Desk at AP&M 1313 (map), 8 a.m. — 4:30 p.m., weekdays.
- Requests for departmental installation and repair of wireless networks: Complete a Customer Service Request (CSR), and choose wireless from the Select A Service menu.
- Specific departmental wireless networks: Contact the corresponding system administrators.
