Injury & Illness Prevention Training

Summary: Learn how to access Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) safety training.

UCSD developed the Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) in response to a state law that requires safety training for all employees. The program's purpose is to help employees understand and avoid on-the-job risks.

Who is required to attend IIPP training:  All employees must attend an IIPP course once during their career at UCSD. New employees should attend within 30 days of hire. This includes student employees, graduate students, and visiting scholars who receive compensation from UCSD.

IIPP training is recommended for anyone working in a laboratory or other high-hazard environment, regardless of payroll status.

Employees must attend one of the IIPP courses offered through Enrollment Central below, depending on the type of work they perform:

About IIPP training: Discussion covers safety issues affecting all campus employees, including:

  • An overview of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) services and programs
  • Hazard awareness and communication
  • Fire safety and evacuation procedures
  • Emergency Operations Plan and earthquake safety
  • Ergonomics resources

Participants receive a Certificate of Completion to be filed with other department safety records. It's a good idea to make a copy of your certificate to ensure proof of attendance if you transfer to another department at UCSD.

Group training:  IIPP training can be customized for your work group and presented upon request. Group sessions are often the best use of everyone's training time, and usually the most successful way for supervisors and safety coordinators to get employees to a training seminar. Contact the EH&S safety training manager for details.
