Summary: UCSD supports a nonsmoking environment. Employees who are smokers should consult with their supervisors regarding reasonable smoke breaks and designated smoking areas. |

Smoke-free workplace: No smoking is permitted in any indoor area, or within 20 feet of the main entrance or exit to any facility owned or leased by UCSD, including but not limited to:
- Administrative offices
- Auditoriums
- Classrooms
- Clinics
- Conference rooms
- Elevators
- Food service areas
- Hallways
- Laboratories
- Libraries
- Lobbies
- Lounges
- Machine shops
- Private offices
- Reception areas
- Restrooms
- Stairwells
- Theaters
- University vehicles
- Waiting rooms
Smoking policy aboard ships operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is established on each cruise in consultation with the chief scientist.
Smoking is allowed in these locations:
- Covered parking lots
- Private residential space
- Food service facilities with designated outdoor smoking sections
- Private rooms at the UCSD Medical Center with specific written orders from the attending physician permitting smoking
Smoking cessation programs are available through the UCSD School of Medicine.
Enforcement: Any problems should be brought to the attention of the appropriate supervisor or department head. If a problem cannot be resolved in this manner, speak with the HR contact in your department or the Employee Relations specialist for your vice chancellor area. Individuals seeking assistance in enforcing this policy will not be subject to reprisal.
