Radiation Safety Training

Summary: Learn how to access required and recommended radiation safety training.

Principal investigators must make sure individuals listed on their Radioisotope Use Authorization (RUA) complete appropriate training prior to any unsupervised work with radioactive material.

Read about required and recommended radiation safety training below.

With the exception of laser safety training, these programs are for research users only, not medical (routine treatment and diagnosis) users. For Nuclear Medicine, contact the EH&S Healthcare Safety Office, (619) 543-7575, to schedule safety training specific to health care providers.

Required training
Radiation: Safety Seminar Required for anyone using radioactive materials.
Annual Radiation Safety Refresher Required for anyone using radioactive materials.
Radiation: P-32 Safety Seminar Required for researchers using P-32 >10 mCi per experiment.
Radiation: S-35 Safety Seminar Required for researchers using S-35 > 10 mCi per experiment.
Iodine Safety Required for individuals performing iodinations. Training presented upon request.
Laser Safety Required for anyone using Class 3b or 4 lasers. There are two ways to get laser safety training:
  • Contact the EH&S Laser Safety Officer, (858) 822-2850, to schedule a training program.
    OR
  • Complete laser safety training on CD-ROM. Intended for non-medical laser users, an interactive CD-ROM training module is available by appointment only at the EH&S Services Lab, located in University Center 301-B. The program takes about 1.5 hours to work through.
    • Call (858) 534-6418 to schedule an appointment during the lab's regular business hours, 1–4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Radiation Producing Machines: Safety Fundamentals Required for anyone operating a radiation-producing machine.
Recommended training
Radiation: Liquid Scintillation Counting Methods Recommended for anyone working with liquid scintillation counters.

Group training available by request:  With the exception of Radiation: Basic Safety Seminar, all other courses listed above can be presented to work groups upon request. Contact the EH&S Radiation Safety health physicist assigned to your building to schedule training.

If you are a UCSD employee with questions, contact the EH&S Radiation Safety Officer, (858) 534-6138.

Notice: Refer to the Radiation Safety Manual (PDF) (Word file) for a detailed description of UCSD's radiation safety program. Also, read about the latest changes (PDF) (Word file).
