Council charge:
The Council advises the chancellor through the vice chancellor for Business Affairs on policies relating to health, safety, and environmental affairs at UCSD and ensures the effectiveness of campus programs to successfully implement those policies. The council serves as a venue to voice and address health and safety concerns of faculty, staff, and students as they arise. Responsibilities of the council are to:
- Review and approve policies on all matters related to health, safety, and environmental affairs, which are not overseen by other existing UCSD safety committees (e.g., Radiation Safety and Surveillance Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, Chemical Safety and Surveillance Committee)
- Review accident and injury statistics and peer comparison data, and recommend programmatic approaches to reduce accidents and injuries to the greatest extent practicable
- Systematically select and comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of programs and issues related to health, safety, and environmental affairs, as approved by the chancellor on an annual basis, making detailed recommendations for improvement
During the first quarter of each academic year, the council, in conjunction with the chairs of other existing safety committees (i.e., Radiation Safety and Surveillance Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, Chemical Safety and Surveillance Committee), the director of Environment, Health and Safety, and the vice chancellor for Business Affairs, develops a potential list of programs and issues for audit and for review and approval by the chancellor.
