The California Legislature has passed a law that prohibits state and local agencies from using an individual's Social Security number (SSN) as an identifier on cards or documents, including embedding it in bar codes, chips, or magnetic strips. In response, UCSD has developed an alternative to its previous practice of embedding SSNs in the magnetic strip of Campus Cards. (For more information about state privacy legislation, see
California Office of Privacy Protection.)
If you have a Campus Card issued after Jan. 1, 2004, it already uses student or employee ID numbers instead of SSNs as personal identifiers.
If you have a Campus Card issued before Jan. 1, 2004, Student Business Services must update it to use your ID number as a personal identifier. Have your department's HR representative complete a Campus Card Request Form (PDF) and then bring your ID card to the Student Services Center, 3rd Floor South, 401 University Center. Hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday.
For more information about obtaining an ID card, see How to Get or Replace a Faculty/ Staff Campus Card.
