Class B Certification: Commercial Driver License

Summary: A commercial driver license is issued in accordance with federal regulations and allows an individual to operate a commercial vehicle.

Class B certification is required for drivers who:

  • Transport 10 or more passengers, including the driver
  • Operate a van rented, leased, or owned by UCSD Fleet Services that has the capacity to seat more than 10 people (effective Jan. 1, 2005)
  • Operate single-axle vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more
  • Tow a vehicle or trailer, which has a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Transport hazardous materials that require placards
  • Tow any combination of 2 trailers or vehicle and trailer

The Class B license for transporting passengers requires a passenger endorsement, issued by the DMV. Fleet Services provides behind-the-wheel training for Class B certification only for employees who require a commercial driver license for university employment or drive UCSD Vanpool passenger vans.

To begin the process of obtaining a commercial license, visit the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

For more information about driver training and certification, contact Dennis Bell, (858) 534-3485, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
