The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each fall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The best time to get a flu vaccine is early October to mid-November, before you feel flu symptoms.
Do your part to help prevent the spread of flu:
- Get a flu shot:
- Faculty and staff: If you're enrolled in UC-sponsored health plans, contact your individual health care providers for availability and instructions on obtaining flu shots under health plan provisions.
- Students: See Immunizations at Student Health Services for information.
- Flu Clinic Locator: You can also find a flu shot clinic by ZIP code, courtesy of the American Lung Association.
- Stop the spread of germs:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
- Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.
- Print and post in your workplace this Cover Your Cough poster (PDF).
- Practice good health habits to stay healthy during flu season:
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Be physically active.
- Manage your stress.
- Drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
Recognize flu symptoms:
- High fever (102° – 104°F)
- Headache
- General aches and pains
- Extreme tiredness
- Chest discomfort, cough
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (much more common among children than adults)

- If you think you have flu or a cold:
- Stay home if you can't control your secretions.
- Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and check with a health care provider as needed.
