Eligibility for Relocation Allowance  
 
Summary: Learn which positions are eligible for relocation allowance (compensation intended to offset higher living costs in a new location).
Type of position Eligibility requirements
New employee The employee must be classified as Senior Manager, Manager, or Senior Professional. Requirements include the following:
  • The person, at the time of recruitment, must not be employed by the university and also must reside outside the state of California.
  • The total relocation allowance may not exceed 25% of the employee's annualized base salary.
  • The relocation allowance is included in the employee's gross income as taxable wages (but is excluded from covered compensation under the UC Retirement Plan).
Transferring employee The employee must be classified as Senior Manager, Manager, or Senior Professional. Requirements include the following:
  • The total relocation allowance may not exceed 25% of the employee's annualized base salary.
  • The relocation allowance is included in the employee's gross income as taxable wages (but is excluded from covered compensation under the UC Retirement Plan).
